 Workshop Facilitator: Malvikaa Solanki

A research scholar from IISc, Bangalore and founder of swaYYam,  Malvikaa Solanki has worked with various non-profits at the policy and grassroots level on issues of ecology and environment. She has done a Permaculture Design Course with Geoff Lawton, Rico Zook and Narsanna Koppula. She did her Permaculture Teachers' Training with Rosemary Marrow in 2018 and has been teaching Permaculture & Regenerative Organic Agriculture drawing from her real-life experiences on the Open Shell Farm. Today, the farm produces about 70% of all its food and boasts of over 4000 saplings of over 400 species of trees. She also works with the local community of farmers on the 1000treeproject in her village near Bandipur Tiger Reserve. The project aims to ensure food, fodder and livelihood security through regenerative practises that in turn reduce the stress on the fragile forests and prevent biodiversity losses.

Cost Inclusions:

  • Course Fee
  • Accommodation will be provided from  24th January,Thursay night to 27th January, Sunday afternoon.  Participants are advised to arrive for the workshop after 3pm and before 6pm on Thurday, 24th January (to avoid wild life encounter)
  • All Meals starting from Dinner on Thurday to Lunch on Sunday

Travel Route: 

  • Travel Time: Bangalore - Yelachatti, 5 hours; Mysore - Yelachatti 1.45 hrs.
  • Route: Bangalore - Mysore - Gundlupet - Yelachatti. There are buses every 45 minutes from Gundlupet to Yelachatti.
  • The venue is 5-7 minutes walk from the Yelachatti stop. 

Contents of the workshop:

Permaculture is a cultivated ecosystem learning from natural patterns and processes and mimicking them in our own systems so we can use the functionality of nature in our own life support systems. With careful permaculture designs, we can create ecosystems that require fewer inputs from us as they evolve over time.

Note:

  • Accommodation will be comfortable, basic and shared. Please bring your own sheets and sleeping bags/blankets. Mattresses and pillows will be provided.
  • The site is off the grid and therefore mandates a wise use of electricity. We encourage you not to bring your laptops or any heavy energy-use gadgets. There will be two sockets for charging phones. Bring your charged power banks as a backup. 
  • Food will be vegetarian, organic and mostly locally grown on the farm.
  • Minimum age group is 6 years. 
  • You carry back with you whatever waste that cannot be composted, including sanitary napkins. We recommend you use cotton cloth pads or a menstrual cup. 
  • Travel from Bangalore is not included. 
  • Any extra food or stay other than what is mentioned in cost inclusions will be charged at Rs. 500 per night and Rs.250 per meal payable at the venue to the host. 

Things to bring:

  • Sun hat
  • Warm jacket and cap as it can get really cold at night
  • Full sleeve shirt
  • Comfortable clothes to sit on the floor and for hands-on sessions
  • Blanket/sleeping bag
  • Bedsheet
  • Water bottle
  • Flashlight/torch
  • Natural mosquito repellent (citronella based)
  • Bio-degradable/natural toiletries
  • Towels
  • Medications if any
  • Binoculars, if you want to look around for elephant or wild boar sightings
  • Notebook, stationery
  • Covered shoes and flip flops
  • Your own plate, glass and a spoon
  • A musical instrument, if you play one
  • Any snacks or goodies you want to share with your group
  • You may bring your own tents if you require privacy

Cancellation policy:

There will be no refund for any cancellations. However you can transfer to anyone wanting to take up the course. In case it is not possible to transfer the amount, it will be considered a donation towards the 1000 tree project by swaYYam.
