Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra (SKKK) came into being when 12 local Lambani women, from the Thanda of Susheelanagar, were brought together to work as a group in1984. It was registered as a society to revive the traditional crafts of the area and improve the quality of life of craftswomen by encouraging and developing their skills and marketing the products, thus ensuring regular income to its artisans.
Today, alone in Lambani craft, there are more than 300 craftswomen benefiting from us with an additional 100 under the training program. The artisans are paid regular wages along with various benefits such as subsidized ration, bonus, provident fund, free medical facilities etc. We encourage the revival of indigenous crafts, ensuring a better life for the people who made them, finding new markets and making the crafts more relevant to modern tastes. We currently have 20 SHGs actively working under us in various crafts.
We are actively involved in the process of production, marketing and development activities of the artisans and crafts like cane and bamboo, stone and wood carving, traditional hand block printing, natural dyeing etc. We have received the prestigious UNESCO Seal of Excellence for Handicrafts in South Asia in the years 2004 and 2012 as recognition of excellence in contemporary crafts. We have also obtained GI (Geographical Indication) tag GI Tag no. 134 for the craft ‘Sandur Lambani hand embroidery’ with the help and assistance of Craft Council of Karnataka in the year 2012.
