Pottery Workshop and Tour - Delhi, 20th October 2019

This Diwali, spend time with the ones who light up your homes. A tour of the potter's colony in Uttam Nagar, designed exclusively for Diwali with an aim to appreciate the effort and time the potters take to make our houses beautiful on this occasion.  This will be followed by a close interaction and a learning session under one of the renowned national award potters of the city.

Workshop Details:

Workshop Date & Time : 20th Oct ( 11 am - 3 pm )

Location: The meeting point is Uttam Nagar East Metro Station Gate number 1

Workshop Facilitator: Gaurav Sharma

The walk would be led by Gaurav Sharma who is a Guest Faculty at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Delhi. His Heritage walks on different historical themes have been covered by BBC, NDTV, The HINDU, Hindustan Times, Scroll and various media platforms. Having grown up amidst the multilayered culture of Delhi, he is a true Dilliwala. He has an honors degree in History from Dayal Singh College, University of Delhi and subsequently enhanced his passion by completing 'INDIA: ART & CULTURE' certificate from National Museum Institute. His experience of working in art galleries gave him a fair idea of what art connoisseurs look for. He has also been a history consultant with TIMES Newspaper in Education. He did a short stint at Khalsa College, St.Stephens College and Department of History at Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Delhi. While his long term experience of researching on historical personalities provided him with sufficient credentials to narrate historical events in a factual manner, it is his ability of narrating the same that engrosses the listeners.

Workshop equipment: Potter's wheel will be provided

Workshop Content: 

1)  A tour of the potter's colony with an aim to understand the life of a potter.

2)  A talk on how this colony got setup in the middle of west Delhi with potters coming from Rajasthan and Haryana.

3)  An aim to understand the role of the government in supporting this art.

4)  Attempting to understand the challenges faced by the potters.

5)  Understanding how Diwali lights up the lives of these potters.

6)  Pottery session under the renowned National award winner Hari Kishan Prajapati 

7)  Understanding the environmental effects of burning wood for kiln which are used for baking the pots created.

8)  Discussion on alternate ways to sustain their livelihood, how the next generation views the art as a career option and impact of technological advancements on the craft     

Note: We request all the participants to reach the location 15 mins prior to allow the tour to start on time.


Itinerary: 

11:00 am: Meet at the Uttam Nagar East Metro Station

11:00 am -11:15 am: Meet and greet ,  Introduction and Ice breaking activity

11:15 am -11:30 am :10 mins walk to the potter's colony

11:30 am -12:00 pm: A brief will be given by Gaurav about the tour while walking around and observing various potters working in their houses. 

Participants are welcome to ask any questions that they may have.

12:00 pm-1:00 pm: Participants are taken inside the house of the famous potters in the locality who have also won various awards in the same field.  This will be followed by an interaction session with the family to understand more about the lives of artisans. You are also encouraged to try their hands-on pottery to understand how it is done and what challenges are faced by the artisans in their daily lives. Here every partcipant will be given a limited time period to try their hands on a potter's wheel under the supervision of Mr. Hari Kishan himself. The process of making the diya takes around 1 whole day as it has to be kept for drying and then sent for baking. In case you want your own diya as a take away then it can be collected 2 days after the workshop or we will also have an option for you to buy the diwali diyas directly from the artsians themselves. We don't expect you to make the perfect shaped diya as it is a very complex art and requires a lot of practice. Please don't get disheartened if your diya breaks while preparing it. The whole idea of the workshop is to give you a partial idea of how this art is being practiced. According to the number of particpants the potter's wheel will be arranged keeping in mind that every participant gets time to experience the same.

1 pm - 1:30 pm: Taking the participants to various kilns around the colony and explaining the baking process. These Kilns are lit up every evening till late in the night for baking. 

1:30 pm - 2 pm- Photography time for the participants to have a look around the colony, meanwhile introducing you to the finest shops in the market for you personal Diwali shopping. Kindly note the cost for personal shopping is not included in the cost of the tour. We would suggest that you carry your own handbags for the shopping as plastic bags as not welcome on the tour.

2 pm - 2:30 pm- Talking about the learning of the day and how an individual help these potters to sustain their livelihood through this excellent art. 

2: 30 pm - 3 pm- Vegetarian lunch at Haldiram

Terms & Conditions: 

1) Parking available on first cum first serve basis.   

2) Please wear comfortable loose clothing.

3) Food provided will be 100% veg only.

4) Please wear sports shoes for walking.


Cancellation Policy: 50% refund on or before 7 days from the date of the event. No cancellation permitted a week before the workshop.
